Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Perry was forbidden to perform in front of her family until the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the stress it would cause. Perry was shy in high-school and was not a performer. The actress began her acting career in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends when she transferred from Boston University. In 2016, Perry appeared on nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal that starred her dad. The character she played was an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. She got the part in an audition that was open despite having a connection to the character.
